STEVE
KATZ
Steve Katz was born in Mount
Vernon, New York and graduated from The State University at New Paltz with a degree in Art
Education. He taught art at Arlington High School in Poughkeepsie, NY and at
the Browning School in New York City.
He has had one-man shows of his work at the Robert Samuel Gallery in Manhattan, and in
Provincetown, MA at the Ellen Harris Gallery. His work is currently represented
by On The Main Gallery in Ogunquit, Maine, The Dunedin Fine Art Center Gallery in Dunedin,
Florida, and at Norma Glamp Gallery and The Memories Gallery in Provincetown. Steve Katz
is also a frequent exhibitor at The Provincetown Art Association. Seventy-two
of his hand-colored images are sold nationally as greeting cards by Artists To Watch of
St. Paul, MN.
Five years ago, Mr. Katz participated in a one-day workshop on Polaroid
Transfer. He immediately realized the Polaroid Transfer technique was the
medium that would allow him to combine his photographic talent with his unique sense of
hand-coloring. The resulting image appears to be a cross between a photograph
and a painting; dreamy, with an old-world quality. He is currently a
faculty member at the Dunedin Fine Art Center where he teaches workshops on Polaroid
Transfer.
Photographing his subjects using slide film, he then projects the slide and photographs it
using Polaroid film. The negative from the Polaroid print is then burnished
into watercolor paper, creating a print. Mr. Katz then hand-colors these prints with many
layers of colored pencil to bring out the feeling of light, which is so indicative of his
work.
Steve Katz lives in Provincetown, MA and New Port Richey, FL. His work can be viewed
on his website: www.stevekatzgallery.com.
